A Short Film About Chilling…

by mark on May 19, 2009

This 1990 Channel 4 documentary is largely responsible for introducing me to the Balearic beat and provided enough of a pull for me to get together with half a dozen mates and head out to Ibiza to experience it first hand the following year.

It’s awesome footage and classic soundtrack are truly essential viewing, and nearly 20 years on, it hasn’t lost any of it’s charm or relevance and is a wonderful reminder of the white isle in it’s heyday.

Enjoy

This is just how it was back in the day, basic, free spirited ,liberal,an amazing time of life changing discovery for so many of us from the paradigm shifting acid house generation.great to see this classic film again well done

As I watched this the memories came rushing back so clearly. I feel very lucky to have experienced the openminded and free spirited clubs and djs of the island before money and the media changed everything.

What a great vid, just discovered it through a post on twitter. Shame you just don’t see enough of the early footage on T.V anymore, its all Ibiza Uncovered instead, shame as this reflects the true spirit of the Balearic scene and what DJs year after year head to the island for.

Thanks for putting this up.

Hey everyone,
here’s the link to Andrew’s AVI copy of A Short Film About Chilling.
It’s not bad quality, certainly an improvement on the VHS version that I’ve got rattling around in the cupboard!

Anyway, download it here, watch and enjoy.

Does anyone know what the track is that plays on 7 mins? – “Ah ha.. Here We Go!…” (it plays as everyone chills around the pool)

‘A Short Film About Chilling’ awesome documentary, it’s producers need to package this onto a DVD and make it available as matter of duty, it’s a classic youth culture documentary. It made a massive impact on me as did ‘Style Wars’ about 5 years or so earlier 1984/85-ish. It’s amazing how powerful Art, Music and Dance can be. And how it can truly resonate through your life – once you’ve been zapped ain’t no goin back!!!!!

Thanks – top site by the way

Hey Jon-Paul,
Thanks for your comments!

The tune you’re after is the Weatherall remix of ‘Soon’ by My Bloody Valentine and can be found on the Glider Remixes EP. Here it is on YouTube

I agree that a re-release would be awesome…. 20 year anniversary coming up… who knows!
Glad you’re enjoying the site, it’s always good to get positive feedback!

Take it easy,

GS February 16, 2010 at 10:49 pm

Whats the opening track called??????????????? Thanks for the file! Lost my old VHS copy many years ago!!

mark February 17, 2010 at 12:18 am

Hey GS… it’s Weatherall’s mix of St Etienne – Only love can break your heart.
A timeless piece of music!

Fantastic site. My mate emigrated to New Zealand in 97 with this docu ,and after seeing it about a million time before he went i wanted to see it another million times, nothing can buy how i felt back then but over the years i have managed to gather almost every piece of music from said film including Weatherall remix of soon which i got about 5/6 years ago so .all we need is the old white doves from 89-90 maybe for just one last time.

As good today as it was 20 years ago.

The best film / documentary on dance culture ever made and a great, pre chillout, soundtrack that defined a major part of my youth.

I don’t know who owns the rights but this needs an official dvd release to mark its 20th anniversary.
